How to Celebrate Chinese New Year

In most of the world we celebrate the New Year on January 1st, but for over a billion people all over the world it is celebrated on a different date. The Chinese New Year is based off of the lunisolar Chinese calendar and takes place on the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar. The celebrations last all the way through the 15th day of that month. Because it is based on a completely different calendar than ours they dates can vary from year to year. The celebrations are diverse and often steeped in complex tradition over the fifteen days that the holiday is celebrated.

In the days leading up to the Chinese New Year it is often customary to do a thorough cleaning of your home. The idea is that you are sweeping away all the bad luck from the previous year making it clean for the good luck the New Year will bring you. On the eve of the New Year there is usually a large traditional dinner where family and friends gather. This takes place on or around midnights to celebrate the New Year and many Chinese families even have count downs to midnight much like the rest of the world does leading up to January 1st.

The fifteen days of celebration for the Chinese New Year party decorations are rich in tradition and is definitely a busy time for everyone involved. The first day is usually dedicated to visiting elder family members such as grandparents. Fireworks celebrations are also very common for the first day of the New Year and often times it is customary for gifts to be exchanged among those family members that are married to the younger members of the family. These are just a few examples of the types of complex traditions that take place through throughout the next fifteen days of celebration.

Outside of China the New Year’s celebrations tend to be localized among the different Chinese families and communities that have immigrated to countries all over the world. If you are interested in taking part of these celebrations there are many cities throughout the world that have a “China Town” where you can take part in the daily festivities.  You don’t have to be Chinese to have a good time and welcome in the New Year.

For fifteen full days the Chinese New Year and party supplies are celebrated with a series of complex and traditional events that are meant to pay tribute to ancient gods, celebrate family, and usher in good luck to the year to come. You will see these celebrations taking place in nearly every country in the world. If you’re interested in taking part in some of the traditions you will guarantee to have a great time.
